The Academy of Athens was established in 1929 and is the oldest and one of the major research centres of Greece. Its main purpose is the advancement of the Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, the conduct of research in the fields of Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, and Social andPolitical Sciences.
To fullfill these objectives, the Academy of Athens supports scientific research, participates in international scientific organisations, carries out publications, grants scholarships, and confers awards and honorary distinctions.
It consists of 14 Research Centers, all with specialized libraries, and operates a central Library named the “Ioannis Sykoutris Library”. Since 2002 the Academy of Athens supervises the Foundation of Medical and Biological Research. It has a long history of excellence particularly in the humanities. It has recently launched a comprehensive digitization project covering most of its humanities research infrastructure resources.
